Day 1: Meeting at Zvartnots International Airport
Transfer to a centrally located hotel. Overnight.
Day 2
Yerevan City Tour (the main streets, the Opera House, the Republic square, the Cascade Matenadaran. Echmiadzin - Zvartnots – Yerevan
Breakfast at the hotel. The guide will show the tourists the main streets, the Opera House, the Republic Square. The trip will be continued to the Cascade – a giant stairway which links the downtown area of Yerevan with the Monument neighborhood. It has multiple levels with fountains and sculptures. Here Cafesjian Center for Arts is worth visiting. The museum inside represents one of the most ambitious works of contemporary architecture. At the top of Cascade Victory Park is located. The park is a large forested area with an artificial lake, an amusement park, cafes, the Mayr Hayastan statue – a female personification of Armenia.
Matenadaran, which is one of the richest and fascinating depositories of ancient manuscripts and books in the world. The collection now numbers over 100,000 manuscripts, documents, and fragments.
Echmiadzin and Zvartnots are the most developed tourism sites. They are both listed as UNESCO sites. Echmiadzin is known as the Holy Mother See. This church is the spiritual homeland for the Armenian people. Inside the church there is a museum which have treasures, art and religious relics that have significant importance for Christians all over the world. Lunch in Echmiadzin, in the Cross of Armenian Unity Ethnographic and Youth Center. On the way back to Yerevan the tourists will see Zvartnots Church ruins. Dinner in Yerevan. Overnight.
Day 3
Yerevan – Ashtarak (Karmravor, Tsiranavor, Spitakavor churches, Hovhanavank and Saghmosavank monasteries) – Yerevan
Breakfast at the hotel. Trip to Ashtarak region where there are many ancient monuments and works of art which have an outstanding place in our culture. The Karmravor Church is one of the few 7th century churches that have brick tiles on its roof. Since the early Christian period, the Tsiranavor Church has been constantly renovated and added on to. In the 18th century, surrounding walls were added in order to keep the grounds clean. Locals call that area “Bertatagh”, meaning “neighborhood of the fortress. There used to be a monastery called Spitakavor Church (13th-14th cc.) located at the top of a cliff. A large bridge was constructed out of red tufa stone across the Kasakh River next to which the remnant of another bridge built between the 12th and 13th centuries is located. The cemetery is full of monumental gravestones and cross stones.
Hovhannavank is an Armenian Apostolic Church monastery located in the village of Ohanavan in the Aragatsotn Province of Armenia. The monastery complexes of Hovhannavank and Saghmosavank are five km apart and situated in the villages of the same names of the Ashtarak district. Both monuments perch on the edge of the precipitous gorge of the Kasakh river. Their silhouettes dominate the adjacent villages and rise sharp against the background of the mountains crowned by Mt. Aragats. Lunch in a beautiful place in Saghmosavank. Return back to Yerevan. Dinner in Yerevan. Overnight.
Day 4
Yerevan – Sanahin - Haghpat monasteries – Armenian-Georgian border Sadakhlo
Breakfast at the hotel. Trip to marvelous architectural complexes of Sanahin (966 AD) and Haghpat (976 AD). The architectural details and decoration of the monuments have much in common, which gives us a ground to presume that they were created by craftsmen of the same school. Lunch in Haghpat. Transfer to the Georgian-Armenian border.
